HYGIENE & CLEANING LEARNERSHIP

The primary purpose of this qualification is to develop the foundational, practical and reflexive competencies required for a career in the Hygiene & Cleaning Services Industry. A main focus of this qualification, is the development of a culture of quality service and professionalism in a cleaning services environment. This qualification intends to produce cleaners who can find gainful employment in the cleaning industry.

 

The range of learners that will benefit from this qualification will include : cleaners, team leaders, supervisors, temporary or relief cleaners and emerging entrepreneurs who currently, or who aspire, to operate in the cleaning industry at large. Also, It is recognized that Cleaning is a ‘feeder’ industry from which learners can move into other related sectors.

 

This qualification is designed as the first qualification in the learning pathway in the cleaning sector and is suited to the following occupations:

• Cleaner

• Laundry assistant

• Car wash attendant

• Garden services

• Relief cleaner

• Room attendants

• Ward hostess

• Domestic worker

• Sculler

The second qualification in the sector will expand on this knowledge and is suited for the following occupations: Specialist cleaners in the cleaning industry (notably Textile, Laundry, Industrial and Health Care Cleaning), Team Leaders, and Care givers.

 

Skills Programme

Don’t need to do a full learnership? We also offer Skills Programmes which break down full learnerships into shorter accredited modules.

 

Applicants who meet the following minimum criteria will qualify to apply:

 

• Must have Grade 12 or at least Grade 11
• Age between 18 – 35 years old
• Must be able to read, understand and write fairly well in English
• Must be unemployed
• Must be SA citizen
• With or Without disability – Disability should not restrict learner from completing physical tasks required to complete the learnership
• Must have not previously participated in this learnership and must not currently be on any other learnerships

 

WHAT MIGHT I BE DOING?

A role like this will vary and will require you to work across the factory – however the following are likely to be included:

 

• Carrying out scheduled daily cleaning tasks
• Cleaning of processing equipment and production lines to meet required standards, measured through testing of samples
• Deep cleaning of production areas
• Post cleaning checks to make sure everything has been completed properly
• Ensuring that all paperwork is correctly completed
• Making sure that everything you do complies with company procedures for Health & Safety and Hygiene
• Ensuring that your cleaning and personal protective equipment are functioning correctly at all times
• The ability to work effectively under pressure of time
• Reporting any incidents or environmental concerns to your line manager.

 

 

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

You’ll work similar hours to the production staff in your company although these hours may be offset as most of the hygiene operations will take place outside of normal production hours.

The role of hygiene operative may also require you to work weekends when deep cleaning or equipment and production areas are needed.

The team in which you work may be small but will need to be highly efficient to get the job done, so you can expect many demands on your time

WHAT ABOUT THE PAY?

The pay rate for a hygiene operative will vary widely, depending on where you are employed – this will likely be in line with that earned by an experienced production operative.
